Prompt 6: Movement

I’ve been trying to get back into movement, in any way, and I’ve decided I’m going to follow my desires.

Usually, I have a framework that a personal practice follows (which is different from a practice where my intention is to create teaching content). While that has varied through the years, it’s more or less been a warm up and hip shimmy, technique drills, and practicing any choreography or creative movement content that I need for any upcoming work.

These days, I’m putting on a playlist and moving. That’s it. That’s my framework.

I came across an interview somewhere recently where Rick Rubin (see Prompt 5) was talking about people asking him what to do when their creativity eludes them. He asked ‘How is not being creative serving you?’. I’ve thought about that every time I don’t want to practice, I feel too internal, too unmotivated, and too heavy to move. And so far, my answer is ‘not moving doesn’t serve me at all’.

My proposal for this prompt is that you move, and you challenge yourself to do what you normally don’t. Are you comfortable drilling? Then don’t.
Do you usually improvise? Then make some phrases.
Do you often work creatively? Then choose a small micro movement and drill the hell out of that.
Have you been meaning to journal about dance or movement but haven’t? Sit and do that.
Have you not watched dance online for ages? Check these out:

Have you not recorded an improv for a while? Dust your camera off.
Have you been meaning to send me something? Go do something, record it and send it.
